Book Description

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem traditionally attributed to Homer. It chronicles the perilous, 10-year journey of the warrior-king Odysseus as he fights to return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. While he battles mythical monsters and the wrath of vengeful gods at sea, his faithful wife Penelope and son Telemachus must defend their home against a predatory crowd of suitors competing for his throne.

Emily Wilson’s 2017 version transforms this classic into a fast-moving, modern verse translation written in traditional English iambic pentameter. Her work is celebrated for its linguistic precision, clear style, and a perspective that strips away centuries of over-masculinised interpretations.

My Opinion

I have always been interested in the mythological elements of this story, and am so glad that I finally came around to reading it.
As I have only recently started, I am not able to give a just critique on the piece.
